The story is based on the true events of Ensio Tiira. In 1953, whilst travelling via ship into the midst of the first Indochina war, Ensio befriended a Swede, Ericsson to jump ship escaping the Foreign Legion. Thinking they would easily float to land, with little to no supplies, they floated on the Indian Ocean, in a rope raft for 32 days. Ensio survived to write a book - ‘The raft of Despair.’ (1955)
